Scotchgard FAQ's
1
How does Scotchgard Protector(TM) work?
Scotchgard products are flurochemical treatments developed by 3M.
They provide an effective protective treatment by surrounding each individual
fibre with an invisible shield. Scotchgard Protector improves the fibres
resistance to oil and water-based stains, as well as soiling from everyday
use.
2
How long does the protection
from Scotchgard products last?
Under "normal" conditions and with reasonable care, Scotchgard
Protector will provide long lasting benefits. 3M research has shown that
Scotchgard carpet protector is very durable to foot traffic. However,
performance will diminish somewhat over time and with each steam cleaning.
Scotchgard Protector should be reapplied by after the second or third
steam clean. Re-applying after every cleaning can only enhance the protective
properties of the treatment.

3
Does water always bead up on Scotchgard treated products?
Some carpet fibres and some upholstery fabrics may not exhibit
the beading characteristic typically linked to Scotchgard Protector. In
the case of carpets this can be caused by spaces between loosely woven
carpet pile. With upholstery certain fabrics with a polyester content
may not exhibit the beading up effect. This does not affect the stain
and soil resistance of the Scotchgard protector application. The liquid
can easily be blotted up even if it does not bead up.
4
Does Scotchgard Protector "waterproof" carpets?
Scotchgard Protector is not intended to be used a waterproofing
agent for carpet. However, it will provide improved resistance to water
based substances.
5
Is Scotchgard Protector safe for children and pets?
Yes, all Scotchgard Protector products go through extensive testing
and can be safely used in homes.
6
Does Scotchgard Protector have an odour?
Scotchgard Protector is odourless. Once applied to furnishings
it does not release chemicals into the air. However, other components
in newly manufactured furnishings may cause an odour for a short time.
Proper ventilation will minimise this.
7
How should carpet treated with Scotchgard Protector be cleaned?
Regular vacuuming is essential. Scotchgard(TM) Protector helps
keep dry soil and oily residues from sticking to the carpet fibres. This
makes routine vacuuming more efficient and delays the need for a general
steam cleaning. 3M recommends professional steam cleaning and Scotchgard
reapplication after 2 to 3 steam cleanings.
8
Are competitors products the same as Scotchgard Protector(TM) from 3M?
When properly applied at the mill, most fluorochemical
products will provide reliable protection. But none will perform better
than Scotchgard Protector. That's because different Scotchgard products
are designed to work with particular soft furnishings, ensuring optimum
performance on any given item.
