Pet staining

We all love pets. Puppies and kittens are so cute and cuddly, it would take someone with a very cold heart not to love them. But the same pets that bring us such joy and happiness, also can create some very big problems - especially when dealing with carpet and upholstery. When Fido or Tiddles have an accident, here's the way we professionals take care of it. Also included are a few tips that you can try at home. Please keep in mind that some pet spots are permanent, no matter who tries to clean it up. Some factors like: what the pet ate or drank, the time that the contamination has been there, the fibre composition, and other details will determine the success, or failure, of the cleanup.

WARNING: This help file applies ONLY to colourfast carpets. Please don't try these steps on upholstery! Call in  a professional for contaminated upholstery.

Pet spots should be remedied AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Here's how:

Pet Urine

  1. Identify The Area of Concern - Seems pretty obvious, but take a look (and smell) a few feet around the area. Many times pets use the same area over and over again, but occasionally they may go in other areas a few feet away.
  2. Check Carpet For Colour - Apply the mixture found in the next step   to a clean, white terry towel. Place the dampened towel onto an inconspicuous part of the carpet. Leave the towel applied for 2 minutes, remove and check the towel for any dye transfer from the carpet to the towel. If there are no signs of colour bleeding, proceed. If there are signs of bleeding, STOP IMMEDIATELY & CALL A PROFESSIONAL!
  3. Treat The Spot - Pour 1/4 cup white vinegar in a small spray bottle and fill the rest with cold tap water. Spray directly on the spot and gently agitate area with the handle of a plastic spoon. Caution: if you rub the area too hard, you will disrupt the carpet fibres and that's usually permanent. Be extremely careful when agitating the fibres.
  4. Blot It Up - Now take a clean, white terrycloth towel and blot (don't rub) the area. Continue spraying and blotting until it is either gone or not working any more.
  5. Apply a Poultice - A poultice is a wicking agent. Take several clean, white terrycloth towels and arrange them so that you have many thickness of towel on the dampened area. Then apply a heavy, plastic weight to the top for 24 hours. The theory behind this is that since the remaining spot dries from bottom up, the contents will wick up into the towel leaving a clean carpet. It does work!
  6. Repeat if Necessary - If the spot is getting lighter, repeat steps 3. through 5.
  7. Post Treat (if necessary) - If the area continues to smell, it's time to call a Professional

Spotting Guide

This is is only a guide to help you remove stains! Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Services is not responsible or liable for stains that you can't remove or have made worse by treating them with different cleaners! Some stains are permanent.Contact a professional  cleaning company for further advice for any difficult stains!

Spills and stains should be treated immediately. The longer a spot remains, the more difficult it will be to remove.

Blot up spills with clean, white, absorbent materials (towels, napkins, tissues, etc.) Keep blotting, and repeat, and repeat.DON'T RUB!

Remove solid built-up materials with a rounded tablespoon, spatula, or edge of a dull knife.

PRE-TEST SPOT-REMOVAL AGENTS in an inconspicuous area (under a sofa cushion, on an area of carpet under or behind a piece of furniture). Apply several drops of solution on the article and blot gently with a clean white towel. If colour transfers to the cloth or a colour change occurs, a professional cleaner should be consulted. Apply the solution again, wait 1/2 - 1 hour, if possible, and inspect for any damaging colour changes.

Do not over wet. Use small amounts of the cleaning agents and blot frequently. Always blot, do not rub or brush.

Work from the outer edge of the spot towards the centre to prevent rings.

Beginning with step 1, treat the stained area with each spotting solution until the stain is removed. It may not be necessary to complete the entire series of steps. The final step is always to rinse carefully the area with water, then absorb all the remaining moisture with absorbent towels.

Be patient. Some stains respond slowly. All spots and stains cannot be removed from every fabric due to differences in fibres, dyes, constructions, finishes, composition of the stain, length of time the stain has remained on the article, etc. Some stains require professional treatment.

SPOTTING SOLUTIONS

ALCOHOL - Use neutral spirits grain alcohol or clear (uncoloured) rubbing alcohol. Methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol are appropriate alcohols to use.

AMMONIA SOLUTION-Mix one tablespoon of clear household ammonia with one-half cup of water.  *Ammonia will set stains on wool and silk but may help in removal from other fabrics.

BLEACH - Use hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate available from us. Do not use chlorine bleach.

DETERGENT SOLUTION - Mix one teaspoonful of a colourless mild detergent or automatic washing liquid/powder in a cup of lukewarm water.

DRY-CLEANING SOLVENT - Volatile dry spotter or a commercial spotter. Use in small amounts - can be harmful to   backing or stuffing materials. Do not use gasoline, lighter fluid or carbon tetrachloride.

ENZYME DETERGENT - Mix a solution of enzyme detergent following the directions on the label. Do not soak or overwet. Allow the solution to remain on the stain for the recommended length of time before removing.

POG - Paint, oil and grease remover, available from us.

VINEGAR SOLUTION - Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water.

Always test and make sure the carpet/fabric is COLOURFAST.
